Frequently Asked Questions
Fees, Insurance, & Payment
-
Joyful Journey Counseling is a private-pay practice and does not currently accept insurance. This means clients are responsible for paying their session fees directly rather than billing through an insurance provider.
-
My decision to offer private-pay therapy is rooted in my desire to provide personalized, flexible care without certain restrictions imposed by insurance companies.
While insurance makes therapy accessible for many, it often requires a mental health diagnosis for coverage. I believe our emotional well-being is shaped not only by individual experiences but also by our environments, relationships, cultural backgrounds, and larger societal systems. Not every challenge we face needs to be viewed through the lens of a diagnosis.
Private pay allows us to focus on your unique needs and goals while taking a more holistic approach to your care. Recognizing that cost can be a barrier, I also offer flexible pricing options to help make therapy more accessible.
-
Depending on your insurance plan, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement through out-of-network benefits.
I can provide a superbill upon request, which you can submit directly to your insurance provider for possible reimbursement. Please note that reimbursement is not guaranteed and typically requires a qualifying mental health diagnosis.
I encourage you to contact your insurance provider before beginning services to verify your coverage, reimbursement rates, and requirements.
-
You can inquire about reduced or pay-what-you-can rates during your initial consultation. We'll briefly discuss your financial circumstances and what fee may be manageable for you.
Requests are reviewed individually, and approval depends on financial circumstances and availability. Accessibility rates are offered for standard 55-minute sessions only.
-
I accept major credit and debit cards, as well as HSA and FSA cards for eligible therapy services.
Please check with your HSA/FSA administrator to confirm your specific plan's eligibility requirements.
-
A Good Faith Estimate outlines the expected cost of your healthcare services before receiving them.
Under the No Surprises Act, clients who are uninsured or choose not to use their insurance have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate. One will be provided in accordance with federal requirements.
If you're billed at least $400 more than your estimate, you may be eligible to dispute the charges.

Scheduling & Sessions
-
All therapy sessions are conducted virtually through a secure telehealth platform. You must be physically located in Massachusetts during your appointment.
-
Absolutely! We can adjust your session length based on your needs and the focus of our work together.
Standard sessions are 55 minutes, while extended sessions are 85 minutes. Changes are subject to scheduling availability and what makes sense for your therapeutic goals.
-
I understand that life happens and plans sometimes change! To respect our scheduled time together, I require at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling.
48 hours or more: You may cancel or reschedule your appointment without any fees.
Less than 48 hours: If you need to reschedule, we can explore another appointment during the same week or the immediately following week, based on mutual availability. A $20 late-rescheduling fee will apply.
Late cancellations or missed appointments: Sessions canceled with less than 48 hours' notice that cannot be rescheduled, as well as no-shows, will be charged the full agreed-upon session fee.
I understand that unexpected circumstances and emergencies happen. Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Getting Started
-
That's what our complimentary 15-minute consultation is for!
We'll briefly discuss what brings you to therapy, what you're looking for, and any questions you may have. It's also an opportunity for you to get a feel for my personality and approach before deciding whether you'd like to move forward.
-
At this time, Joyful Journey Counseling offers individual therapy exclusively for adults ages 18 and older. While I've previously worked with children and adolescents, my practice is now focused on supporting adults through life's challenges, transitions, and personal growth.
-
Our first session is all about getting to know you. We'll explore your background, current concerns, relevant experiences, and what you'd like to gain from therapy.
There's no pressure to share everything at once. We'll take our time, and I'll help guide the conversation as we begin identifying your goals.
-
Some people come to therapy with specific, short-term goals, while others benefit from ongoing support. There's no set timeline or expectation that you stay in therapy for a particular length of time.
We'll regularly check in on your progress and make decisions together about what feels most helpful as your needs evolve.
